What To Do When You Don't Have Time To Write

I want to answer a question I've seen a lot.

What if I don't have time to write?

The answer to this question is A LOT simpler than you think.

In today's post, I'm going to give you some tips on what to do when you don't have time to write!

Let's go!

Picture this: You're staring at the blinking cursor on your document, and nothing comes to mind.

So you click out of the document and scroll through Pinterest, pinning several of the pins in your feed.

What about Instagram or Twitter? You gotta check up on those notifications!

Next, you decide to visit YouTube. You spend 5+ minutes on each video until you suddenly realize you've been watching videos for over a half hour. You click out of that and quickly go back to your document.

By the time it's all said and done, you've been on the computer for an hour, and you still haven't written anything! Now it's time for dinner. While you're washing dishes, you say to yourself, "Wow, today has been so busy! I had no time to write! Maybe I can sneak some in tonight."

But then your family wants to either play games or watch a movie, and of course you want to do that too.

"Oh well, today I just didn't have time. Maybe tomorrow."

Do you see a trend here?

You spend time on the computer scrolling through social media and YouTube, while you could be using that quality time to write.

How many of us go about our day, hoping to squeeze in some writing when it's convenient, only to find that writing isn't convenient?

Well, writing isn't convenient. Just like everything else in life—school books to be studied, chores to be done, meals to be prepared, etc.—writing needs to be made a priority in your life.

I'm speaking to myself here too. We aren't always going to find a time to write that's convenient. Sometimes we need to make sacrifices.

The best sacrifice to make is cutting back on social media and YouTube. While those things can be great for advancing your writing, spending too much time on them will hurt your writing.

So I have a question for you: Do you really not have time for writing? Or do you tend to prioritize other things over writing? (Yes, I've done this too!)

Here are three apps that I've heard help people stay focused.

Freedom App — "If you need to focus on your work, break a habit, or simply improve your relationship with technology, Freedom can help. By blocking distracting websites and apps, you’ll be more focused and productive."

Cold Turkey Writer — "Cold Turkey Writer blocks everything on your computer until you reach your writing goal. Your goal can either be a duration of time or number of words typed. Once you click start, you can't go back."

The Most Dangerous Writing App — If you stop writing for too long, this website will DELETE everything you just wrote. It truly is the Most Dangerous Writing App. It forces you to keep writing, even if it's nonsense.

(Note: I have no experience with either the Freedom App or the Cold Turkey Writer, but the Most Dangerous Writing App is fun—as long as you DON'T stop writing!)

Another idea is to do a word sprint with either yourself or with a friend!

Here's how word sprints work:

  • Get a partner (or do it by yourself).
  • Set a time. Usually 25 minutes is good, but if you want to shoot for a different amount of time, go right ahead!
  • For that set amount of time, write as many words as you can.
  • Whoever writes the most amount of words in that time slot wins the sprint! (Or, if you are sprinting by yourself, try to beat your goal or record!)

So there you go! Hopefully you're able to diagnose the problem for not having time to write and can rethink how you'll prioritize your activities!

  1. Hi, Julia! I don't know if you do blogger tags but if so, I tagged you for the Mystery Blogger Award here

    1. Thank you, Naomi! I don't do tags anymore, but thank you for nominating me! :D

  2. I completely agree with you about how writing isn't convenient, but we just have to do it anyway. Great post, Julia! :)
