What Can Fiction Writers Blog About?

What can fiction writers blog about?

On the Young Writers Workshop Community, I've seen this question often. For non-fiction writers, blogging seems to come more easily. They can blog about all sorts of things! From Christian living and writing advice to how to take care of a pet guinea pig, non-fiction writers seem to have all of the opportunities.

But...fiction writers don't write non-fiction as much (although I highly advise that fiction writers learn how to write both).

So what can fiction writers blog about?

That's what I'm going to talk about today!

Let's go!

WHY SHOULD FICTION WRITERS HAVE A BLOG?

Just like non-fiction writers, fiction writers need a platform. A simple way to do this is to start a blog. You can also write articles for websites to build your platform.

I would suggest starting out with a blog. (I have some posts about blogging, which I'll link to below, so be sure to check those out!)

So why should fiction writers have a blog? For the same reason non-fiction writers should have a blog: platform.

(You don't need a blog to build a platform—there are other ways—but a blog is a pretty easy place to start.)

WHAT CAN FICTION WRITERS BLOG ABOUT?

I'm going to give you 6 blog post ideas that a fiction writer can write. You're welcome to use these for your own blog!

1. CHARACTER INTERVIEWS

You can make an interview with your character! You can be the interviewer, or you can ask a fellow blogger if he/she would like to collaborate with you and interview your character on his/her blog!

It's fun to get to know an author's character!

2. 1ST PERSON LETTERS FROM CHARACTERS TO READERS

Why not take a break from blogging and let your characters do all the work?

Your character(s) can write a letter in first person to your readers. What about? Well, that's for you (or your character) to decide. Your character could write about his homeland and family, or maybe a tragedy that happened. . . . So many neat ideas!

3. WRITING SNIPPETS

These posts are fun! Share snippets of your writing with your readers! You can give smaller sections at a time, leaving your reader at a cliffhanger if possible. ;) Up to you!

4. SHARE WHAT YOU'VE LEARNED AS A WRITER

Another idea to share what you've learned as a writer. Maybe post a snippet of your writing, then share the hardest part of writing that snippet. Share what you've learned from writing it. Share how you've improved.

5. WRITING TOOLS

Every writer uses something for his writing, so why don't you tell your readers what YOU use? Microsoft Word? Google Docs? Scrivener? Etc.

You can write about how to use them, as well as tips and tricks you've learned to help you in your writing.

6. WRITING ADVICE

A final idea is to blog about writing advice. This is what I do here on this blog. I blog weekly about writing and blogging advice, and I'm still primarily a fiction writer.

You're welcome to scroll through my blog and see what it looks like to blog about writing advice!

There you have it! 6 ideas for a fiction writer to blog about! Of course, there are other ideas, but here are some to get you started on your blogging journey!

  1. Wow, I didn't even know this was a struggle for other writers! Seems I'm always struggling to keep up with all the blog ideas! What a great list of tips! I blog about a variety of fiction and non-fiction topics, book reviews, writing advice, book lists, devotions, etc. I'm hoping to include some more behind the scenes posts around the time my next book releases!
