How To Make Your Blogger Blog Look PROFESSIONAL Without Spending A Ton Of Money

Hey friends! Welcome back!

Today, we have a question about blogging. Eliana asks,

“How do I make my blog as pretty as yours—especially when Blogger is out to get me?”

To begin, thank you for your comment! That’s really sweet <3 Also, the last part of your question is awesome XD

But really, I’m so glad you asked this question because it's important! When people go to a blog and see something cheap, why are they going to stay for the posts?

Let's dive right in!

You followed me for a while on my last blog, Willowcreek Pines. (Go ahead and cringe at the setupI do XD)

I used one of Blogger's themes for Willowcreek Pines. I tried different templates but didn't like any of them. Blogger itself is greatI use Blogger for this blogbut I personally do not like Blogger's themes. In my opinion, they are outdated and non-professional. (Again, Blogger itself is great!)

So I decided to do some research and find a new template/theme.

And that new template is what I'm using here on Julia Nelson, and I love it!

So where did I find this template? Honestly, I simply did some random searching online. I typed into the search bar something like "Free Blogger Templates," and some websites came up. So I started searching through those sites.

Eventually, I landed on this template, which is made by Beauty Templates. Seriously, setting up this blog could not have been easier! The directions were super clear and helpful!

And guess what? I didn't pay a penny for it! It was completely free! (If I would have paid for it, I would have gained a few bonuses, plus some free tech support to get my blog looking exactly the way I wanted, but I didn't want to spend the money, and I didn't feel I needed the extra tech support.)

So I downloaded the template, followed the directions, and viola! the blog was up! Next, I had to put in my own work with all of the blog posts, pictures, etc.

So what should you do? I'm going to give you a simple yet practical strategy to finding a blog template that you LOVE!

  1. Search "Free Blogger Templates" online and click on a few sites. (Exercise with caution!) I suggest this website, especially. My blog is actually a minimalist blog template, not a writing blog template, so feel free to search different types of templateseven if you don't think food templates, for example, would fit your blogging style. You never know!
  2. Write down some of the templates that stand out to you. Copy and paste the links so you can come back to them later. (The links should be to the demos of the templates.)
  3. Once you have some ideas, narrow them down to a few choices, then ask a parent/sibling/friend to help you make a final decision. (My mom helped me make a final decision on this template.)

When you get your template, your blog name probably won't look very pretty. It will be simple and bold and...yeah.

That's where creativity and graphic design comes in!

I LOVE using It's easy after some practice and knowing your way around. It's a free site! (You have to pay for some things if you want them, but for the most part, the free version works really well.)

I created this using Canva:

It was actually a lot of fun to make! Every bit of it was free (besides the work on my part to make it). I downloaded this to my computer from Canva in a JPG image.

Once you've created your design, follow these steps to set it up on your blog. (These steps will probably work for any template on Blogger, but I can't guarantee that it will look nice on every template.)

I apologize that the photos are blurry. I'm not sure how to get clearer images. :(

First, go to Layout on the sidebar in Blogger (step 1). This ^ will show up. Go to Header and click on the little Edit button on the bottom right (step 2).

A little window will pop up looking something like this ^. Next, click CHOOSE FILE and select the file from your computer that you want to upload.

As you can see, the file is now uploaded. Be sure to select the highlighted choice: Instead of title and description.

Next, scroll down to the bottom and click SAVE!

Finally, go to your blog and take a look!

These are the steps I used to upload my design to my blogwhich is the design you now see when you first go to my blog.

I hope this was helpful for you, Eliana, and for the rest of you! There are more elements to creating a professional blog, but today, we just covered the templatewhich is super important! Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

Have a question of your own? Comment below!

what about you?

What site do you use for your blog (Blogger, Wordpress, etc.)? Where did you get your template?
Was this helpful for all you Blogger users out there?

  1. :O Another one of my questions! Thanks Julia! I’ll need to try this some time (when I have time, that is)! =)

    1. You're very welcome, Eliana! Glad it was helpful! :D

  2. Here's a follow-up question for you, Julia, when you have the time or interest to write it! :) How do you tend to market yourself as a blogger? Are you just sharing this with friends and family? Making it public and who cares who sees it? You've inspired a writing bug in me and I'm not entirely sure what to do with it aside from applying it to my own pork in Progress for now. :)

    1. Hey Heidi! Great questions! Thank you for asking!

When do I have time and interest to write my blog posts? Well, I MAKE time to write these blog posts. Blogging is not always a piece of cake. It takes time and energy and creativity to find the right photos, create the graphics, and write the posts. As for the interest, it's people like YOU who continually inspire me to continue blogging! I LOVE receiving comments and things like, "You've inspired me!" It keeps me going and reminds me why I serve my readers.

A big tip is to prioritize your writing/blogging. Don't make it the center of your life, but you might have to say no to some things in order to find time write. (And planning ahead for blogging is key, for sure!)

How do I tend to market myself as a blogger? I share my blog link and/or email list sign-up link with people who ask where they can find me online. I also give a lot to my readers--my time, mental energy, and creativity by blogging consistently and answering readers' questions when I can, and they might help me market by sharing links with their friends. In addition, I build my platform by submitting to websites, such as (which is the only site on which I've been published so far). On my author page, there's a link to my blog, and here on the blog there's a place to sign up for my email list.

My email list consists of people I know in real life (family/friends), people I "know" online, and people I had no idea were reading my posts. So I have a broad mixture. XD My blog is public, and I love meeting new people who stop by.

Does this help at all, Heidi? Let me know if you have any follow-up questions! :D

  3. Hello friends!!!
