My Writing Journey | August 2018 Update

by - February 10, 2019

Hey, all! Welcome back!

Goodness, is it the end of August already?! That's crazy!

While we haven't started school yet, I took the first year of a really intense Latin course last year (and this year I'll be doing the second and final year). So I've been studying Latin and reviewing Spanish. Piano lessons also started back up for the school year.

The volleyball season has started, too! It's a lot of fun, and it keeps me busy!

That said, I've been trying to write as much as I can this month. It's been a good month, actually! I'm excited about my progress!

So without further ado, let's begin today's post!

This month, I had a great time in the publishing department (I guess you could call it)! I wrote an article called, "Jen Barrick: Extraordinary Teen, Extraordinary God," and submitted it to About a week later, I received the email that it was accepted! I am very excited! This past Tuesday, it was published! Click HERE to read my article.

My newest novel, In His Hands, is going pretty well! At first, I wasn't sure about it because I wasn't connected with my characters. However, now I'm starting to get closer to my characters.

Does this sound crazy to you? My dad thought I would be relieved to finish A Candle in the Window, which was my previous novel. No, I was sad that it was finished. I loved my characters so much (and still do) that it was hard to leave them behind and move on to a different time period with different characters. (If you're an author, you probably understand what I mean. #writerproblems)

Here are my current stats for my Civil War novel:

In His Hands
Status: Rough Draft
Word Count: 29,400
Page Count: 85
Chapter in Progress: 8 (+ Prologue)
Part in Progress: 1

What I've learned: I've found that you have to let your characters have hurt and pain in order for them to become real to you. Elizabeth, my MC (main character) hates slavery. She hates the way her friendsand other slavesare treated. The pain coming from deep inside her makes her real to me.

I have been writing and polishing an article called, "Why Do I Need to Forgive?" This was inspired by my pastor's sermon, and I think it's a good topic for people of all ages. I plan on submitting it this weekend.

I've also been working on an article called, "There Are Two Roads: Which One Are You On?" I'm not yet sure if I will try to submit this. There's so much to say in a short article! We'll see what happens to it!

As for my novel, I used to be too lazy (yes, I admit it!) to outline my chapters/scenes as I wrote them. However, once I started outlining again, writing In His Hands has been so much easier
and so much more enjoyable. It's amazing what one step can do for your writing.

let’s chat!

What about you? What have you accomplished this month? Anything big or anything small counts as an accomplishment, and I'd LOVE to hear about it!
