Katie's Letter | Novel Snippet

by - February 10, 2019

It's been a while since I've shared a writing snippet from my novel, A Candle in the Window. The reason is this: I didn't know what to share without giving anything away.

However, while reading/skimming through a bit of my novel, I came across a letter from Katie (my main character) that she writes to her best friend, Paul. I'd like to share it with you today!

You've already met Paul from the Prologue of my novel. Here's the synopsis of what happens before Katie writes this letter.

When Katie's mother decides to get remarried to someone Katie just met, Katie's world seems to be turned upside down. There's one good part about the wedding, thoughPaul will be able to see how pretty Katie looks in her red dress. After moving from Williamsport, Indiana, to Spurgeon, Katie misses her best friend.

This is the letter she writes to him after the move:

Dear Paul,

I’ve missed you so much! It’s strange here in Spurgeon, so far from everything I’ve ever known. I still don’t understand why God brought me here. My new siblings—Eric, Peter, and Becca—do their best to make me feel welcome. Eric and I had a small fight last night—but he was just trying to help me through my confusion, so everything’s okay.

We live on a farm. Guess what? They have horses! I’ve always wanted to ride a horse. Maybe my new brothers will teach me.

Although it’s nice in Spurgeon, I still wish I was in Williamsport. I don’t dare tell Mama, though. She’s so happy here. It’s like having Papa with us again—yet it’s so different. Mr. Martin isn't Papa, but Mama loves him just as she loved Papa.

I found a note scribbled in Papa’s Bible. It was addressed to me! Papa always said the Bible was his favorite book. I wonder what’s in it that makes it so special. Maybe one day I’ll find out.

Please write back and tell me how you are doing. I wish you were here, Paul. You’re the closest friend I’ve ever had. I think that’s what I miss most about Williamsport—our friendship.
